Following the abolition of Poor Law Unions under the Local Government Act 1929, responsibility for the poor was transferred to the Public Assistance Committee of Anglesey County Council until the foundation of the National Health Service in 1948. The Valley workhouse of the Holyhead Poor Law Union became the Public Assistance Institution, Valley, and in 1948 the Valley Hospital.
