Gallantry Notes: MC: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He controlled his machine guns with great skill and initiative. On one occasion, he engaged two enemy batteries at 500 yards range. His fine work greatly assisted in the advance of the infantry.;

Gave evidence to the Court of Enquiry held at Hesdin, 23 January 1918, into the losses suffered after the German counter-attacks on Bourlon Wood, Nov 1917.He told the Court that he had kept four guns in the action from a support position until forced to cease-fire to let them cool down. He had served for two years with the Company and was absolutely satisfied with the way the men had fought on November 30th. (from "A wood called Bourlon" (William Moore) 1988);
