TITLE DEEDS

The title deeds, covering property on the Isle of Wight, chiefly in the parishes of Yarmouth, Thorley, Freshwater, Shalfleet, Calbourne, Brading, Newport, Arreton and Whippingham, fall into two groups; the "main series", for lands acquired by Sir Robert Holmes and his descendants down to 1804, and a second, smaller series for the little estate founded by John Worsley of Pidford. The two estates were combined in 1804 on the death of Leonard Troughear and succession of his cousin, Henry Worsley of Pidford. Although the two estates remained, for the time being, subject to different settlements the two sets of records appear to have been amalgamated at this time. Deeds for the Irish estates, the Welsh fee farm rents and the property in mainland England all belong to the main series.

The title deeds have been divided into forty-two sub-classes, each corresponding as far as possible to a single, discrete property, see class list below. The properties are broadly arranged in sequence of acquisition, those which formed the Pidford estate are marked with an asterisk. The documents are grouped in bundles, varying in size from a single item to thirteen items. Most bundles are arranged in simple chronological order.
