Administrative / biographical background

Philanthropic Lodge was granted a warrant by the Moderns' Grand Lodge on 1 August 1788 to meet as No. 528 [SN 1124], meeting at the Bull Inn, Hall Street, Melford, Suffolk. In 1792 it was renumbered as No. 437. In 1796 it relocated to the Cock and Bell Inn where it met until 1819 when it moved to the Swan Inn. In 1814 at the union between the Moderns' and Antients' Grand Lodges to form the United Grand Lodge of England it received the number No. 501. It was renumbered as No. 331 in 1832. In 1837 it returned to the Cock and Bell Inn. The Lodge was erased on 3 December 1851.
