Killed in action in France July 20. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Allan G. Madder, of Gloucester and Carshalton, being given his commission in June, 1915, and seconded for service with Machine Gun Corps in June, 1916. Photo (Chronicle and Graphic 19/8/16)Second Lieutenant Robert Madder, 5th Gloucester Regiment. attached machine-gun company, was born in December. 1887, and was the only son of Mr. Allan G. Madder, of Carshalton and Gloucester. He was educated at Whitgift Grammar School, and in 1907 joined the staff of the Peninsular and Oriental Steamship Company. At the outbreak of the war he enlisted in the London Rifle Brigade, and in the following June took a commission in the Gloucester Regiment. He went to the front at the beginning of November, 1915 and early this year was seconded for service with the Machine-Gun Corps. On July 20 he was leaving a German dug-out when he was killed instantaneously by shell fire. Second Lieutenant Madder was first flautist and hon. treasurer of the London Shipping Orchestral Society. He was a member of the choir at All Saints Church, Carshalton and of the C.E.M.S. His captain writes:- "I have lost an excellent officer of a type that cannot easily be replaced, and as a man and a member of our mess we had a great affection for him."
