Administrative / biographical background

William Playne and Co. became a part of Winterbotham, Strachan and Playne Ltd. in 1920. The other Gloucestershire based members of this group were Hunt and Winterbotham Ltd. of Cam Mills and Strachan and Co. Ltd. of Lodgemore and Frome Hall Mills, Stroud. In 1955, Kemp and Hewitt Ltd., woollen manufacturers of Trowbridge, merged with William Playne and Co. at Longfords Mills, though the firm to a certain extent retained its separate identity.

All records which can definitely or tentatively be identified as those of Kemp and Hewitt have been listed.

Winterbotham, Strachan and Playne later became part of Illingworth, Morris and Co. Ltd. of Bradford, Yorkshire.

A speciality of these firms was the production of tennis ball cloth (see 3/111-14, 118-19, 121, 124-25, 4/29, 4/40, 49-51, 7/6/10, 22 below)
