Genre: Architectural Photography. Close view of a pillar, carved in the form of a figure of Shiva, in the Airakkal Mandapa of the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '305 - is a not uncommon form of Shiva, probably Bhairava, represented with four arms, each hand holding one of his usual emblems, by which he is easily recognised.' Another copy at Photo 1000/29(2955).
