The Withington Players were formed in 1946 as a drama group affiliated to a local community association. The chairman, John Alldridge, literary critic of the Manchester Evening News, wrote and produced many of the plays performed.

He died in November 1973 and the following spring the Players joined the Withington Community Association Theatrical Section, which was renamed the Withington Community Association Players.
