Richd. How II to Silena Ramsay Yesterday Nanny Robbins dined with me. She promised to assist thee as much as possible. Her opinion is 'twill be best not to employ any lacemakers at first, but to buy a small parcell for a trial which she will engage to furnish cheaper than you could get it made. She advises therefore not to buy any lace thread at present. One ought she thinks to have some knowledge of the lacemaker before one engages with them, as it is a common practice amongst them to get patterns, thread, money or goods from one & then sell their lace to another, & if prosecuted in Ampthill Court, etc. to make over their effects to a relation so that there is nothing left to seize, & the creditor is only laught at. - About difficulties of starting brewing at Edmunds & bringing all the beer in pails: perhaps easier to get a barrel from Ampthill to begin with - Number of grates needed - Cost & method of removals - Martin writes Stubbes he had received a letter with fair promises from R. Ramsay but does not mention the date.
