Gallantry Notes: DSO: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while in command of three companies of machine gunners. He drove of four heavy enemy attacks with great slaughter. He handled his guns excellently and displayed great determination and initiative under the hottest fire.

MC: For conspicuous gallantry in action. It was largely due to his fine example that his machine gun company rendered conspicuous service under most trying conditions.;

Sent home from France April 1915 whilst serving with 2 Bn Argylls for propositioning a Sergeant (Brind) of his Bn - offering to give him a bath at a house that he was occupying in Armentieres. Sir John French was apparently "strongly of opinion that Lieut Hutchison is not the class of officer whose services it is desirable to retain";
