Immediate source of acquisition (When and where the record was acquired from)
- Given to Sion College by Samuel Moody A.M. (see inscription on front pastedown). Samuel Moody [d. 1751], was Rector of Doddinghurst, Essex. On another manuscript given by him to Sion College in 1722 see Sion L40.2/L24. For printed books given by him in 1734 see Sion L40.2/E64, p. 250. The Sherman manuscript was recorded in a handwritten addition to the catalogue of the Library by William Reading published in 1724, with shelfmark A44 (Sion L40.2/E96 f. 209v). At f. i recto is a note dated 1795 by Robert Watts, Assistant Librarian (and, from 1799, Librarian) of Sion College. This states that the manuscript is mentioned by John Ward (d. 1758) in his manuscript additions to his 'Lives of the professors of Gresham College'. It also refers to a document by John Loveday [1711-1798] dated 1758 amongst the papers of Thomas Birch [1705-1766, President of Sion College 1759] on the provenance of this and other manuscripts [British Library Add. MS. 4255, f. 51, which lists the Sherman text as 'amongst the manuscripts which have been lately sent, or will ere long be sent, to Sion College Library from Maidstone']. Transferred from Sion College to Lambeth Palace Library, 1996.
