Description (What the record is about)
-
This map shows a stretch of the Helmund [Helmand] River at the disputed frontier between Afghanistan and Persia [Iran], drawn up from 'native information' supplied to HM Vice-Consul, Seistan [Sistan] and Kain [Qaen], Major Robert Arthur Edward Benn. The map indicates the border between Persia and Afghanistan and the main settlements along the Helmund, and shows the main stream of the river at its junction with the Pariun [Parian] branch, tributary streams, and other channels. Dry and flowing sections of river are distinguished by light brown and blue watercolour. The map also shows an area of dry sand and the course of the old riverbed, and red lines across the main stream show the points of bunds. Letters running from 'A' to 'E' correspond to features described in Benn's report on the river (ff 227-228), to which this map is an accompaniment. The map is dated 19 September 1902 and bears Benn's printed signature and two printing statements: '(60 . 11/1902.1380) 1565 F[oreign]. O[ffice].' And 'Harrison & Sons Lith[ographer]. St Martins Lane, W. C.'.
