Babraham is an ancient parish in the Archdeaconry and Diocese of Ely.
The living is a vicarage, the rectory having been appropriated to Waltham Abbey in the 13th century. After the Dissolution, the Crown retained the advowson until the early 18th century, when it passed to the Bennet family, lords of the manor. The cure was served by a series of sequestrators and curates until the incumbency of John Singleton, vicar 1839 - 1889. Thereafter, the incumbent often also held another local living, for example Great Abington, Hildersham. After 1947, it was held with the vicarage of Pampisford. For details, see the Victoria County History, vol 6 (1978), p28. In 1999 it was held with Sawston (Diocesan Directory 1999).
In 1836, the parish was incorporated (for poor law and related purposes) into the Linton Poor Law Union. The civil (non-ecclesiastical) affairs of the parish have been separately governed since 1894.
