The first meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board for Mission and Unity took place at St. Helena's Retreat House, Drayton Green, London, 14 March 1972, under the Chairmanship of the Earl of March. The Committee would generally meet more often than the Board, and was responsible for the more day-to-day matters of the BMU, thus allowing the Board to concentrate on the major issues. It operated with authority to deal with any urgent matter, other than major policy decisions, which cannot await a regular Board meeting, but which would not justify the calling of an Extraordinary Board meeting. Other tasks given to the Committee included, to consider financial matters and to recommend and approve grants and scholarships, to nominate or recommend for nomination members of committees of the Board and delegates and representatives to ecumenical and other bodies, and prepare the Agenda for Board meetings. The Committee consisted of six members of the Board (one being the Chairman), and met 4 or 5 times a year.
