Administrative / biographical background

Under the provisions of the 1907 Territorial and Reserve Forces Act (7 Edw c IX) a Territorial Force was created by merging the non-regular, non-militia units (the Yeomanry and the Volunteers). To raise and maintain this Force, the Act authorised the establishment of County Associations.

The County Associations were established and constituted in accordance with schemes made originally made by the Army Council and later by the Army and Air Councils together. Service members always made up at least half of the Association's total membership. The remainder comprised representatives of local authorities and co-opted members, including representatives of the interests of both employers and workmen. After World War II the membership was broadened to include specific representatives of the Auxiliary Air Force, the RAF Volunteer Reserve, the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and of pre-service units (the Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force, Air Training Corps and Combined Cadet Force). For further details see TER/1

The basic powers and duties of the Associations were laid down by statute. They included the organisation of units of the Territorial Force and their administration (including maintenance) at all times other than when they were called out for training of actual military service or when embodied; the recruiting of the Force; the provision and maintenance of rifle ranges, buildings, magazines and sites of camps; the provision of accommodation for the safe custody of arms and equipment; the provision of horses for the force's peace-time requirements; arranging with employers as to holidays for training and ascertaining the times of training best suited to the circumstances of civil life; establishing or assisting cadet battalions and corps and also rifle clubs

The Sussex Territorial Force Association was established in 1907; in 1921 it became the Sussex Territorial Army Association and from 1947 until it was dissolved in 1968 it was called the Sussex Territorial and Auxiliary Forces Association. In 1968 the Association was replaced by the South East Territorial Auxiliary and Volunteer Reserve Association which was covered Kent, Surrey and Sussex
