Description

513. Benjamin Kirk, Stalybridge (MQ). Dec. 1835, Jan., Mar., May, Jul. 1836. 15 items.
36 horse power crank engine, with 30¾ inch cylinder, 6 foot stroke, parallel motion, cast iron beam, [cast iron connecting rod].

Reverse plan and sections of the engine house, plan of the tunnel; crank and crank pin; parallel motion - shaded reverse drawing; cylinder, marked "36 horse cylinder to suit 40 horse valves" - shaded original and shaded reverse drawings (the reverse drawing includes dimensions for Cheetham's 36 horse, 1841); small shaft for working slide valves - press copy drawing; lower nozzle and working gear marked "being the 53 horse nozzle shortened" - coloured original and coloured reverse drawings (the drawings include dimensions for Samuel Greg & Co., 1843); small note on "how to get off the waste water". All the drawings except that of the crank and the last item bear letter codes.
Also rough sketch plan and section of engine house, Dec. 1835 (the plan also shows the first engine); coloured plan and sections of the engine house and boiler marked "On the introduction of a Second Engine", by William Bennett, and given to Boulton Watt & Co. while Mr. Kirk was at Soho, 5 Jan. 1836.
