Administrative / biographical background

The firm was started c.1750 by John Ridley (1709-1779), who was succeeded by his son John (1739-1803) and grandson John (1779-1852). This John went into partnership with his son John jun. (1802-1887) but the partnership ended in 1838 (see HC516/4). John Ridley jun. went into partnership with his son Arthur (1835-1882), trading as 'John Ridley and Son, coal, iron, nail, slate and timber merchants'. After Arthur's death the firm was run by his widow, with assistance, until her son Spencer Barker Ridley took over in 1904. He traded as Ridley and Andrews until 1910, when Ridley's Coal and Iron Co. was set up.

In 1930 the company was incorporated, as Ridley's Coal and Iron Co. Ltd.

In addition to its premises at 1 Out Northgate the company had depots at Bury railway station (from at least 1874), Cockfield station (from at least 1874 to c.1929), Mildenhall (from at least 1916) and Saxham (from c.1874 to c.1928).

In 1927 the company acquired the Barrow Hurdle Factory, operating from Green Farm, Barrow.
