A set of papers including much materiel relating to the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition 1902-04, Scottish Spitsbergen Syndicate and correspondence with contemporary polar explorers on a viariaty of scientific subjects. Contempories such as Scott, Shackleton, Amundsen and Filchner are represented along side his fellow scottish scientists and explorers

Administrative / biographical background

William Speirs Bruce was the leader of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition 1902-04 (Scotia). Much of the collection contains papers relating to this expedition and his other scientific work. There is a large amount of correspondence with contemporary polar explorers and interested parties. His other big interest was Spitsbergen with some of the collection relating to the Scottish Spitsbergen Syndicate.
