Salt duties

Richard Chidley, master, and Thomas Goldsworthy, mate of the sloop 'Thomas and Mary' from Bideford, stated that on 14 Dec. last they shipped 2,106 bushels of French prize salt at St. Bideford to carry to St. Ives on account of Francis Hicks of St. Ives, fish curer. On 15 and 16 Dec. the vessel ran into stormy weather, took in water, and 135 bushels 22lbs. salt was destroyed: Collector of Excise required to cancel the bond relating to the duty on lost salt.
