Administrative / biographical background

Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1947 the County Council was responsible for the preparation of a development plan which included town maps for urban areas in the county. The material submitted to the Minister of Housing and Local Government and approved in 1973 is listed as C/P 1. Town Map Number 4 covered an area which formed part of three pre-1974 local authorities: Chailey RDC and Newhaven and Seaford UDCs. DL/A7 includes plans created in the 1940s and early 1950s by those authorities, prior to work on the Town Map (DL/A/7/1-12, 20-39), and work by the County Planning Department on the map itself and on other planning tasks relating to what was to become the Lewes District (DL/A/7/13-19, 40-130). In 1974 the preparation of such plans became a responsibility of District Councils and much of the material which had been created in the course of the preparation of the development plan was passed by the County Council to District Councils.
