Arrangement (Information about the filing sequence or logical order of the record)
-
It has not been possible to completely restore the original order of these documents. On their arrival at the Record Office they were partially in bundles, but on examination these bundles were discovered to be completely arbitrary and were dismantled. Previous to their deposit the deeds were sorted and some of their order destroyed.e.g. leases and the corresponding releases were separated. Such leases and releases have been reunited, also wills and bonds that obviously relate to a particular property have been placed with that property. Where this has not been possible they have been placed under a separate heading e.g. wills and probates of the Arundel family. Where it is not clear from the description of a piece of land that it is part of Glory Farm, then this too has been placed under a different heading.
Notes on the documents made during previous sorting (some of which identify documents incorrectly), have been placed at the end. These notes are in the same hand as the family history notes included earlier. The deeds were contained in C20 envelopes, on which descriptions of the documents were written. Many of these descriptions were inaccurate and the envelopes were disposed of.
Some difficulty has arisen in describing the properties as the boundary between the parishes of Penn and Amersham has been altered. The 1st edition six inch ordnance survey map shows the boundary as passing up the centre of Winchmore Hill, whilst later maps show a move to the east. The parish stated in the description of the document is that given in the document.
The spelling of Winchmore Hill has been standardised to the modern version, but field names have been retained in the original spelling. The depositor retains the originals of the photocopied deeds.

Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)

The Glorie was described as a mansion house in 1632 and in 1700 an inventory of the goods of William Bovingdon, decd., at The Glory was made. A typed commentary and a sketch plan of the house at that time have been constructed.(D/X 988) The house is believed to have been rebuilt by Thomas Bowler Bovingdon on his marriage in 1799. The Glory Farm remained in the Bovingdon family until it was sold by Thomas Bovingdon (1804-1878) to Thomas Grove of Penn, who was linked to the family by marriage. Part of the land described below has become part of the Egham Fields Housing estate, the deeds of which are held. (D/X 921)
