Introduction
The St Marylebone Dispensary was first situated at Queen Anne Street (later Foley Street and Langham Street) from 6 November 1785 to 15 September 1787, at 77 Wells Street until March 1800, then 11 Margaret Street until 3 July 1804, 77 Welbeck Street until 1892 and finally 30 Marylebone Lane until 1936. The early patrons of the Dispensary included H.R.H The Duke of Clarence 1791-1827, H.M. King William 1831-1837 and H.R.H. The Duke of Sussex 1832-1843. During the early years the average yearly attendance was around 1,500 rising to 11,000 in 1926. Education and teaching were always important goals of the Dispensary and lectures were regularly given and publications produced for the general public.
The rapid increase in the population of the north west area of St Marylebone and the parish of Paddington led in 1830 to an appeal for subscribers to a new institution, the Western General Dispensary "for the relief of their Poor neighbours, under the pressure of Poverty and Disease". The dispensary was to provide medical assistance to those who had been involved in accidents and those who could produce a letter of recommendation from a Governor. The patients were to be treated in their own homes as well as at the dispensary. A subscriber who contributed a guinea annually became a Governor who could recommend six persons annually, with a subscription of two guineas entitling him to recommend twelve persons. A subscription of ten guineas made a person a Governor for life, able to recommend six patients annually and a subscription of twenty guineas allowed a Governor to make unlimited recommendations. The new dispensary was located in Lisson Grove South, New Road.
In 1936 the Western General Dispensary amalgamated with the St Marylebone Dispensary becoming the St Marylebone and Western General Dispensary and continued to operate from premises at 48 Cosway Street.
