For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He took charge of a gun team during an attack, and assisted in the capture of a concrete strong point, ten prisoners and a machine gun. He at once manned this gun and used it against the enemy, and kept his own gun in action, also beating off an enemy counter-attack. He showed great courage and initiative.MM: for remaining at his post after the whole of his men had been put out of action at Behrcourt (Somme) on 13th March 1917.
