Description (What the record is about)
-
This Committee, which was appointed on 22 February 1650, was entrusted with re-organising the Church and schools in the North and in Wales. Control from London was difficult and complaints so many, particularly from the North, that the financial side of the Commissioners' work was taken over by the Trustees in 1654. It appears that the Committee relied on money from their sequestrations to maintain ministers, but these sums were so badly administered that very little was done. There are several letters from the Trustees recorded in the general order books (COMM/5) inquiring what progress was being made. The records of the Committee were probably handed to the Trustees when the latter absorbed their jurisdiction.
