Description

Journals of Henry Gibbons (1798-1891) of Loxborough House, Bledlow Ridge

The journals contain detailed records of farming activities, of social occasions and family events. Also included are events in the lives of local people, sketches, reports of national and international personalities and events and presscuttings, sometimes of his own anonymous correspondence in the local press.

These journals were Lot 499 in the sale of 4 June 1996. Their provenance prior to this date is unclear. An insert in the journal (D/X 1317/2 below) states "Three books of Gibson diaries, the property of Mrs Tustin, Crows Nest, Chinnor Hill, Oxon. Lent to me by W Tustin the day before he died and held by me at Mrs Tustin's request for the time being. E C W/Child." The Tustin family are mentioned in the journals as being family friends and living in the area. The same volume contains a 20th-century address label for Lady Jackling, 510 Park Avenue, New York. Burke's Peerage (1970) lists Sir Roger William Jackling K.C.M.G. as having various government posts including Counsellor, British Embassy in Washington 1957-1959 and Deputy Permanent U.K. Representative to the U.N. 1963-1965. His wife was Joan, daughter of Percy Brook Tustin of Crows Nest, Chinnor, Oxon.

Administrative / biographical background

Henry Gibbons was a major land and property owner in Bledlow Ridge. He was also a partner with his sons in Hart, Gibbons & Gibbons, general iron and brass founders, at the Vale of White Horse Iron Works, Wantage, Berks. His public roles included being a member of the Wycombe Board of Guardians and of the School Board.
