Concerns: the Duke's feeling that it was some imputation upon the rebels to let the first lot get so far ahead; a second body of rebels grown formidable after the first marches; asking Lord Hartington to keep him abreast of the [Scotch] affairs; his opinion that those in the northern counties should join together to raise a number of men; compliments to Mr Vernon and Mr Fitzherbert; men in Carlisle and Manchester; post affected by the snow. Written from Chatsworth. Signed Devonshire.
