Description (What the record is about)
-
The documents listed below relate to the Ward End House estate, which formed a part of the manor of Little Bromwich. In 1792 the estate comprised some 48a and was described as 'belonging to the late Mr Isaac Welch', but some years later, in the early 19th century, another map shows Joseph Welch occupying this land as tenant of 'Mr Cox's estate' [MS 513]. In 1826 the property was described as 'belonging to the late Mr Astbury', and at about this time a new house was built on the property, the design for the elevation is included in this collection. The new house did not long survive without alteration or rebuilding, for a ground plan of c.1850 in the collection clearly relates to a further new or remodelled house illustrated in the sale particulars of 1884, and still standing today. The ground plan is described as being of a 'villa for George Marshall Esq.', and George Marshall was the owner at the time the estate was sold in 1884. A small part of the property was bought by Lord Norton's trustees [Norton 262
