Concerns: the 3rd Duke's meeting with the Chancellor concerning Lord Hartington staying to avoid the Primate being put into government and not showing any mark of favour to the opponents; awaiting approval from Hanover of Lord Hartington's other proposals which if it comes in letter should be detained; expecting the response not to be as Lord Hartington hopes; advice to Lord Hartington that as his task in Ireland was a difficult one and his reputation is at stake he should preserve his character so that nothing affects him; his belief that Mr Fortescue's representation of the pacific State of Ireland was partial and that Lord Hartington should send over a more particular account. Written from London. Signed 'Devonshire'.
