Administrative / biographical background

John Russell Frears was a grocer at 17 Osborne Street, Leicester in 1864. In 1870 he moved to Northgate Street and began baking and selling bread. New premises at 11 Frog Island allowed for expansion of the business and John Russell Frears II joined his father in 1889 thus forming "Frears and Son". A new bakery at Frog Island was completed in 1896 and in 1910 the firm became a limited company under the name of 'Frear's Bread Company Limited'. In 1928 the firm was amalgamated with Blacks Bread Company Ltd. to form Frears and Blacks Ltd., based at Abbey Bakeries.
