Note in margin £1100 spent to May 1871; Minute of meeting of Estates Committee of 28 October 1869 ordered to instruct Mr Christian to effect repairs.; Copy letter dated 29 October 1869 to Archdeacon Hale asking him to confer with the Commissioners concerning repairing the books on Thursday next.; Copy letter dated 1 November 1869 to Ewan Christian asking him to proceed with the repair of the Towers.; Letter dated 1 November 1869 from Archbishop Tait requesting subject of Tower and Library be brought up at meeting.; Letter dated 30 October from Hale to Chalk accepting meeting.; Minute of Estates Committee of 4 November 1869 stating that had agreed with Hale to proceed gradually with repair of books and manuscripts “in most urgent need…in as little costly a manner…as is consistent with [security] & good workmanship”.; Report dated 29 October 1869 from Ewan Christian on “the possible means of making it more comfortable for the Librarian during the winter months”. Suggests fixing glass screens but would be “fruitful source of colds to those entrusted with the care of the books”, the books would become damp, the cos would be £220-25) and would damage appearance of Library. Refers to old hot air heating apparatus, new system would cost £180-£200 and would also need fires in grates and the roof and windows to be made airtight. Therefore recommends two “Guerney’s stoves” at a cost of £90 plus enclosing the Lantern at roof level.; Report dated 18 November 1869 from Mr Christian regarding the state of the building “as far as is practicable without the aid of scaffolding and lofty ladders”. Building “sound but roof…has become imperfect and a fruitful source of draughts…. most pressing need is warming power”….cost of Gurney’s stoves ascertained at £70..it would be desirable to put them in shortly as the room in winter is much too cold to be useful”; Minute dated 18 November 1869 of Estates Committee authorising the stoves.; Letter dated 30 November 1869 requesting copy of Gazette with order in Council.; Letter dated 8 January 1870 from Hale to Chalk stating expenditure upon Library to date £44/4 and £100 which has been advanced by the Archbishop (£120) and himself (30).; Librarian’s cash account for August to December 1869 sent by Hale includes £100 for his annual salary. People mentioned included Tuckett for cleaning, binding and repair, Wright (attendant), Spottiswode for stationery, Tunnicliff for coke, Halifax for labels for books, Stewart binding catalogues, Carpenter & Westley, thermometer, Mrs Lipscomb (cleaning), Miller “Catalogue slips”; Copy letter dated 14 January 1870 from Chalk to Hale, explaining that no payments could be made without a certificate from the Archbishop vouching for the expenditure. Sends draft template for certificate.; Certificates (3) dated 14 February 1870 signed by Archbishop Tait vouching for expenditure, one refers to Hale as “Curator” of the Library; Copy letter of 22 February 1870 to Mr Lee of Dean’s Yard returning certificates as incomplete; Letter dated 3 March 1870 from Mr Lee returning certificates with statement and letter from Hale; Letter dated 1 March 1870 from Hale to Mr Lee with statement amounting to £199/3/2. States that the Library has been open during the past year for nine months, three days in the week and for three hours each day. No restrictions because do not know what are required. States “no a sixpence has been expended beyond the £150…. nothing can be more vexatious to be obliged to advance money for necessary expenses and to have difficulty in procuring repayment”.; Librarian’s cash account for August 1869 to January 1870. Includes Librarian’s salary from April 1869. Contains crossings out. Total 149/3/2 once Librarian’s salary for February of £50 deducted. Same names as before but addition of Lipscombe for covering catalogues and making book weights (plus Christmas gratuity of 5/-), Mrs Lipscombe received the same.
