Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)
-
The muniments relating to the estates of Lord Tollemache of Helmingham Hall, Suffolk, were deposited on loan in two stages: Bundles A - P in July, 1955, and Bundles Q - Z in May, 1958. The estates represented by the records are mainly in the ancient parishes of Acton and Bunbury, with other holdings in Nantwich, Northwich and Mottram in Longdendale. Woodhey was the seat of the parent branch of the Cheshire Wilbrahams, but on the failure of male issue in 1692 the estate passed with Grace, a daughter of Sir Thomas Wilbraham, to Lionel Tollemache of Helmingham, 2nd Earl of Dysart.
