Description

Microfilm positive from the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, of two volumes of surveys compiled by John Norden, gent. :

(i) The Cornish manors anciently annexed to the Duchy of Cornwall, surveyed in 1611 and comprising ( in the original spelling ) Portlowe, Tregamere, Leigh Durant, Trevervin Courtney, Landreyne, North-hill, Treworgye, Eastway, Boyton and Brodridge, Tinten, Treloya, Carneydon Priory, Grediowe, Landulo als.Landulye, Clymstand Priorie, Fentregan, Stratton Sanctuarie, Porthea Priorie, Austell, Bonyalvie, West Antonye, Trevenon, Croste Hole 'Burgus', Bucklawrne, and Trelugan, with plans and observations on the parks of Launceston, Restormell, Liskerde, Lanteglos, Carybullocke, and Helsberie including some references to tin mining.

(ii) The Somerset manors anciently annexed to the Duchy of Cornwall, surveyed between 1609 and 1616 and comprising (in modern spelling) Milton Falconbridge, Curry Mallet, Shepton Mallet, Stratton on the Fosse, Midsomer Norton, Farrington Gurney, Englishcombe, Widcombe, West Harptree, Laverton, and Stoke sub Hamdon. Includes a letter from John Norden to Sir Francis Bacon, attorney-general to King James and Chancellor to Charles, Prince of Wales, 1616

Each section is preceded by the responsions to articles of a sworn jury. Survey entries distinguish leasehold and copyhold, and give field names, acreages, rents and heriots, names of tenants and some reversionary tenants, and occasional notes of usurpations. [Names of lives not given].
