The Rural District of Berkhamsted created as successor to the Berkhamsted Rural Sanitary Authority under the Local Government Act 1894 consisted of the civil parishes of Aldbury, Berkhamsted (or Great Berkhamsted), Little Gaddesden, Nettleden (created under the Act from parts of Pitstone and Ivinghoe and transferred from Buckinghamshire), Northchurch, Puttenham, Tring Rural (created by combining the parishes of Long Marston and Wilstone) and Wigginton. When the Urban District of Berkhamsted was created in April 1898, the portion of the parish of Berkhamsted remaining in the Rural District was renamed Berkhamsted Rural. This parish ceased to exist in 1936 when part of its area was transferred to Northchurch and part to Nettleden which, with the further addition of part of Northchurch, was renamed Nettleden with Potten End. In 1964 the parish of Puttenham was also abolished, being absorbed into Tring Rural. Under the Local Government 1972, Berkhamsted Rural District became part of the District of Dacorum.
