557. Shelvefield Gravels, Shropshire. Jun., Jul. 1784. 16 items.
Single-acting engine, with 20 inch cylinder, 4 foot stroke, chain connection.

General view of the engine, front view of the engine and boiler and chimney, ground plan of the engine and round boiler; upright framing behind the cylinder; cylinder, condenser - small reverse drawings with "Whitegritt" crossed out and "Gravells" added in; eduction pipe - original and reverse drawings; working gear - partially coloured original and reverse front and side views, plans etc. (note that there are 4 pairs of working gear drawings but none bear dimensions, notes or titles).

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 45. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 286.

For John Lawrence & Co. Shelvefield Gravels mine, Worthen, Shropshire. The engine is frequently referred to as "The Gravels Engine". The Catalogue of Old Engines gives the stroke as 6 foot. The partners were John Lawrence, Joshua Blakeway of Lythwood Hall, Nathaniel Betton of the Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury and Thomas Lloyd Anwyl.
