The Staple Goods of England were wool, woolsels (skins), leather, lead, tin, cloth, butter, cheese etc, and the public marts appointed by law to be kept was known as the Estaple. This was originally a port out of the realm, but others at home were appointed to which such commodities were carried prior to exportation. Customs were collected by officers of the Staple, and the mayor and constables of the Staple had jurisdiction over all contracts and debts relating to such goods and over all people concerned with them.
Bristol was made a Staple town in 1353, although the process of creating a Staple 'Corporation' in Bristol had begun in 1313.
The court appears to have lapsed in the seventeenth century.
