The Area records include those of the Joint Liaison Committee which was formed in 1973, and consisted of representatives of Hospital Management Committee, Boards of Governors, Local Authorities and the Regional Hospital Board. The purpose of this Committee was to prepare the ground for the 1974 re-organisation. The records consists of administrative records such as minutes, agenda papers, plans, reports and miscellaneous items

The Authority was established in April 1974 as a result of the National Health Service Reorganisation Act, 1973; it was one of 6 Area Health Authorities in the North East Thames Region. The Area encompassed the Districts of City and Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets. It was abolished at the end of March 1982 by the Secretary of State under powers conferred on him by the National Service Act 1977 and the Health Services Act 1980. The Administration was based at Addison House, Chart Street.
