According to Charles E. Box The Liverpool Overhead Railway, 1893-1956, 1962, the line from Seaforth to Herculaneum, with the exception of a quarter of a mile between Nelson and Huskisson Docks was built on a steel viaduct. The viaduct or "structure" was designed by the engineers Sir Douglas Fox and James Greathead and the erection was carried out under their supervision by the resident engineers, Francis Fox and S.B. Cottrell.
The contractor for the work was J.W. Willans of Manchester. Most of the work he sub-contracted to other firms, retaining only the excavation, concreting and repair work of the columns. In the detailed design of the superstructure, the engineers were aided by F. Hudleston of the contractor's and G.A. Hobson, who also designed the decking.
