This collection was given to the Chester City Record Office by Mrs. M. Malloney, on 21 January 1976, 9 March 1977 and 24 May 1977.

Administrative / biographical background

This organisation originated as H.R.H. The Prince of Wales National Relief Fund, which was established in August 1914 to deal with distress which might occur in the city owing to war. District Committees were formed soon after and the name Council of Social Welfare was adopted. The Council organised its own relief and also worked with other charitable organisations. On 31 March 1974 it was dissolved and reconstituted as Chester Council of Community Service and Citizens' Advice Bureau (see CR 204/3).
