William Orr Hampton, Second Lieutenant, 3rd Bn. Norfolk Regiment, 1st July 1916. Age 28.
Son of the Rev. William Henry and Elizabeth Hampton, of the Vicarage, Pondsbridge,
Huntingdon. Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuile, Somme, France, IV. A. 2.2nd Lieutenant William Orr Hampton 3 Norfolk Regt attd 70 Company MGC 1/7/16
Born Pakenham, Suffolk 23/7/87. Son of the Rev William Henry Hampton and Mrs Elizabeth
Hampton of The Vicarage, Pondsbridge, Huntingdon. Originally buried about 1,500 yds ESE
of Authuile church. The officer commanding the Machine Gun Company wrote 'Two men
who were with him state that he was hit and left dead in No Man's Land. The search party at
night failed to locate the spot and the same night the Company was moved from the lines so
had no further opportunity to search'. In May 1917 his parents were still at the above address.
A casualty form states that he arrived by mail boat 4/6/16 and posted to 70 Company MGC in
field 13/6/16 and joined unit three days later. His commission application for the regular
Army, dated 14/4/15, states that address as above, address for correspondence Sgt Hampton
79 Field Company RE, Plassey, Colchester. Enlisted in London on 27/8/14 as No 42022,
occupation schoolmaster, height 6' 6", weight 184 lbs, complexion fresh, eyes grey, hair
brown, religion CofE. Transferred to 77 Field Company 20/9/14, paid L/Cpl 20/9/14, to 79
Field Company 23/9/14, 2nd Cpl 20/10/14, Cpl 14/11/14, Sgt 5/12/14. Discharged to
commission 7/6/15. Served as a clerk in the engineers. Sister was Miss ED Hampton of The
Vicarage, Ramsey, St Thomas' Hunts. (Officers Papers PRO);Other Notes: HAMPTON, Second Lieutenant, WILLIAM ORR, 3rd Bn. Norfolk Regiment and 70th Coy. Machine Gun Corps (Inf). Killed in action 1st July 1916. Age 28. Son of the Rev. William Henry and Elizabeth Hampton, of The Vicarage, Pondsbridge, Huntingdon. IV. A. 2. Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuile - Somme, France.;
