Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume LL3 is the third in the series of nine 'LL' volumes, which covers predominately the various Vicars Choral Estates, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Smith & Watkins and Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the following Estates, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by commutation: York Vicars Choral Estates on 25 December 1864 (effective date) and published in the London Gazette on 15 September 1865 by Order in Council; Chichester Vicars Choral Estates (part of property) on 29 September 1864 (effective date) and published in the London Gazette on 13 May 1866 by Order in Council; and St. Davids Vicars Choral Estates on 24 March 1876 (effective date) and published in the London Gazette on 25 July 1876 by Order in Council. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred.; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Yorkshire, parishes of Budwith, Huntington, Nether Wallop, Skirpenbeck and Warthill; the county of Sussex, parishes of Chichester St. Peter the Great, Chichester All Saints, Chichester St. Peter the Less, Rumboldswyke, Merstone, Oving, Broadwater, Sompting, West Tarring, Durrington, Findon, Wadhurst and Mayfield; the county of Pembrokeshire, parishes of Llanreithan [Llanrythan] and Manorowen.
