In the 1930s Waterhouse began work on a catalogue of works by Gainsborough. Between this date and the date of publication he corresponded with owners, dealers and the staff of public collections all over the world, carrying out detailed research on provenance and attribution. The information he gleaned was distilled into the publication: Waterhouse, Ellis (1958). Gainsborough. London: Hulton. [A copy is available in the Paul Mellon Centre's Library]
