Description (What the record is about)
-
A letter written for the use of a gentleman who lived in the communion of the faithfull remnant of the Church of England till the death of the right reverend father in God Dr. William Lloyd, Lord Bishop of Norwich; but shortly after his death left it and joyned himself to the opposite communion of the Church of England before this letter could be finished'. Signed at the end by Edward Creffield. After the death in 1710 of William Lloyd, the last deprived nonjuror bishop, many nonjurors returned to the Church of England. Edward Creffield's letter argues that the loss of the deprived bishops among the non-jurors was no justification for such a step. At p. 32 is a title: 'A letter etc. By Edward Creffield of Popes, com. Essex'. The Creffield family lived at Popes Hall in the parish of Chappel, near Colchester, Essex. The author of the letter is possibly Edward Creffield (c.1680-1759), Vicar of Messing, Essex, 1705-18. He was buried at Chappel in 1759.
