Stand Lane Independent Church was formed after a split in the congregation of the old Stand Chapel (later Stand Presbyterian Church), the first church building being constructed in Stand Lane in 1792, with the Rev.James Fordyce as pastor. The church has remained on the same site ever since, although the pastorate is now shared with neighbouring churches. A sunday school was opened in 1810, and this was also used as an infant day school from 1835 to 1848, and from 1857 until 1972, when it was closed and the building sold. In 1838, a branch school was opened at Besses, some records for which are included below.
