Photocopied ms account (122pp), written in 1924, describing his and his wife's experiences in Singapore during the mutiny of February 1915, referring to his service as a Captain in command of a detachment of Chinese Volunteers, the organisation of the 5th Light Infantry and their mutinous actions on 15 February, the transfer of his wife and child to the SS IPOH anchored in Singapore harbour and their later transfer to a Russian auxiliary cruiser, problems suffered in their response to the mutiny due to the ineptitude of his men, their involvement in advancing into the area of Tanglin Barracks and the rounding-up of mutineers and his ultimate responsibility for prisoners, mules and weaponry.

Administrative / biographical background

This personal account of the events of the Singapore Mutiny was written by Major Brown and his wife, Mary, in 1924 for his daughter Barbara who was a small child at the time.

The family had been on long leave in Britain from 1914-15 and only returned a few days before the Mutiny. Major (then Captain) Brown was a Volunteer and had passed the territorial examination for Field Officer. (122 pp; ms.)
