Two large bound volumes, entitled 'Modern Encaustic Tile Design' Vols 3 & 4

These two volumes comprise tracings and drawings of encaustic designs from mediaeval sources, with a Company Code no: handwritten on the pages.

Vol. 3 covers the years 1875 - 1881 and mentions by name various moulders which can be checked against wages books, There are tracings of tiles made for the Paris Exhibition, and some trials for glaze firings. Also to be found are mosaic designs and, at the back, some tiled fireplace and hearth designs Vol. 4 covers the years 1874 - 1897 and mentions the name of companies or countries for whom orders were executed, or the Agents supplied, such as W.B.Simpson, London, who had many of the designs made exclusively for them. Some tracings bear the name of the church or public building such as a bank or Town Hall for which they were commissioned and, sometimes, the name of the moulder. There are tracings for Memorial Tablets such as those seen at the Tile Museum, Jackfield, and rubbings of mosaics. All bear a Company code no., and most are dated
