Miyan Mir and Mulla Shah. Style of Bahadur Singh, Lucknow, c.1775-80. Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807. Inscribed beneath the figures in Persian: 'Miyan Mir' and 'Mulla Shah'; on gold panel above: 'tasvir-i miyan mir va mulla shah' (a picture of Miyan Mir and Mulla Shah). Gouache; on an album leaf with inner blue and floral gold border and broad outer gilt-sprinkled border. 201 by 143 mm; page 501 by 346 mm. Reverse: quatrain of 'nasta'liq' calligraphy written diagonally; signed by Hafiz Khwarshid and dated AH1191/AD1777; the background illuminated. Miyan Mir and Mulla Shah stand in a field; Miyan Mir on the right, facing left and holding a closed book, dressed in a grey wrap over a pale yellow jama; Mulla Shah on the left holding out his hands, dressed in white, with a green wrap thrown over his left shoulder. The sky is pale blue with dark grey clouds at the top. Note: The portrait of Miyan Mir is based on the same original as the Shah Jahan period portrait J.7, 11. The style of the sky is almost identical with J.1, 20 by Bahadur Singh.
