Series of maps illustrating minerals ownership, initially mostly by Durham Chapter Estates (hence generic name Durham Surface Sheets) and later by Ecclesiastical Commissioners.; Roman numerals relate to particular OS sheet numbers and are not sequence numbers.; Slips and deeds numbers most probably relate to reversionary leases.; Colours: - washed red - property in possession; - washed blue - glebe land; - washed and edged red - sales by ECE; - washed and edged blue - glebe sales; - washed and edged and hatched red - purchase of minerals only; - washed and edged purple - commons where the minerals belong to the Commissioners; For detailed key please see file ECE/11/5/395; Letters: - M - minerals; - B.C. - brick clay; - C - coal; - I - ironstone
