60 horse power double-acting crank engine, with 39½ inch cylinder, 7 foot stroke, parallel motion, [cast iron beam, cast iron connecting rod]. Engine suspended and never erected for Chance Bros. & Co. Sold to the Patent Shaft & Axletree Co. in Nov. 1853.Partially coloured reverse longitudinal section of the engine house, plan of the tunnel, plan of the engine and boiler houses; press copy list of stones required for the engine house and platforms; rough sketch of engine house. The reverse drawings bear letter codes.
Also drawings of valves [?] for the Patent Shaft & Axletree Co., dated 16 Oct. 1873.Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 980. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 108.
For Chance Bros. & Co. Glass works, Smethwick. Chance Bros. ordered this engine in May 1846, and Book 980 was opened. However the engine was suspended during construction and lay on Boulton Watt & Co. / James Watt & Co.'s hands until Nov. 1853, when it was sold to the Patent Shaft & Axletree Co. A new book was opened, No. 1033, but only one drawing from that book remains.
