Administrative / biographical background

A Rural Sanitary Authority was probably formed for Steyning Union in 1872, under the Public Health Act of that year. This Authority covered an area partly in West and partly in East Sussex, but under the Local Government Act of 1894, and a joint Order of the two County Councils of June 1894, the portions of the R.S.A. in the two counties were formed into the separate Rural Districts of Steyning West and Steyning East from December 1894. The parish of Edburton had formerly been bisected by the county boundary, and this was now divided into two separate parishes, Edburton (West Sussex) and Fulking (East Sussex).

This catalogue is only concerned with the records of Steyning West R.D.C. Students requiring records of Steyning East R.D.C. and of Steyning R.S.A. should consult the East Sussex Record Office.

The R.D.C. was abolished in March 1933 under the West Sussex Review Order, and its area divided between two other councils, Worthing R.D.C. [Lancing, Sompting, Coombes] and Chanctonbury R.D.C. [the remainder], except for Old Shoreham, which was merged with Shoreham U.D., and part of Sompting, which was transferred to Worthing Borough.

Between 1894 and 1933 there were several changes in parish and district boundaries, and the major alterations are tabulated below. Full details of all changes may be found in Boundary Changes in West Sussex (WS.R.O. MP 1348).
