Description

Bundle marked "Earl of Thanet, Skipton Castle, Petyt" containing legal and estate papers [Christopher Peyt was Lord Thanet's steward] 1691-1781.

Including:

- Summary of proceedings against Thomas Pattinson esq. in an action for trespass and damage done by livestock on Mallerstang Common [c. 1720];

- Documents relating to actions for trespass and slander by Lord Thanet against Samuel Swier including brief about trespass case, letter containing legal advice about intended slander case, bill of legal costs, note of submission of Samuel Swier in trespass case, note of penal agreement between Samuel Swier and Christopher Petyt in the matter of the trespass case, demand for £10 damages in settlement 1721-1722;

- Letter, 5 August 1726 [from Christopher Petyt to Lord Thanet] referring to cases at York Assizes about poaching "the witnesses fully proved 7 . 10 . 0 damages done to Walkinson by Swier & his followers and how insolently they had behaved themselves notwithstanding which Judge Page, who behaved himself to the surprise of the whole Court & Country and in such a manner as wou'd be unsafe to mention in a letter, so far Influenced & directed the Jury as to bring in but 3s. 6d. damages" etc; and referring to estate matters, a case of theft of pewter plates, a negligent schoolmaster at Silsdon Chapel, names of candidates for knights of the shire etc.;
